Fellow Ghanaians, Akufo-Addo addresses nation tonight

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to address the nation tonight, 3news.com can confirm.

He is expected to give an update on the measures put in place by his government in the fight against coronavirus since the easing of some of the restrictions.

A tweet by Minister of Information Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in answer to a query by a follower also confirms this.

The last time President Akufo-Addo addressed the nation was on Sunday, May 31 at 10:00pm, when he announced a “phased approach” to easing of the restrictions imposed on the country on Sunday, March 15.

He increased the number of gatherers from 25 to 100, allowing “abridged formats” of religious services.

It was his Update Number 10.

Then, Ghana’s total Covid-19 cases stood at 8,070 with 2,947 recoveries. The deaths were 36, leaving the country with 5,087 of active cases.

Since then, 15 persons have lost their lives, 3,352 new cases have been recorded and 1,209 persons recovered.

The address by the president, then, was to announce Stage One of the process of easing the restrictions.

Sunday night’s address is expected to announce Stage Two of the process.

Al-Shabab ‘Launches Covid-19 Treatment Centre’

The Islamist militant group al-Shabab has dropped its initial dismissal of the Covid-19 pandemic, announcing that it has opened a “treatment centre” for people who test positive for the disease in Jilib town in southern Somalia, an area under their control.

Al-Shabab’s Radio Andalus reported that the group had also introduced a new 24-hour hotline for any of the town’s residents who exhibit coronavirus symptoms to call.

It did not say how many people had tested positive for Covid-19.

The broadcast also did not mention whether the group had any testing kits or if their health workers were capable of detecting infections.

Earlier this month, al-Shabab cleric Mohamed ala-Mohamed urged people to protect themselves from Covid-19 by drinking herbal concoctions, particularly touting turmeric powder and a number of other herbal mixtures as a remedy.

Somalia’s health ministry gives daily updates on coronavirus figures, but it is not clear if its statistics include those from al-Shabab-held areas.

When the virus was first detected in Somalia in March, al-Shabab dismissed it as “God’s punishment”.

In April, senior al-Shabab leader and preacher Fuad Shongole, said, “God sent the virus to punish the non-Muslims”.

In April, the group’s spokesman, Ali Mohamud Rage also said Covid-19 was a punishment from God on “non-Muslim countries for the injustices and transgressions against Muslims”.

Al-Shabab is allied to al-Qaeda and has been launching a series of attacks to depose the internationally recognised government based in the capital, Mogadishu.

Ghana’s Minister for Health tests positive for Coronavirus

The Minister for Health, Kwaku Agyeman Manu is recovering in hospital after testing positive for COVID-19.

Information available to Citi News indicates that the Minister has been receiving treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre in Accra over the past week.

Multiple sources in the medical team at the hospital who confirmed the information to Citi News say the Dormaa Central MP was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday and is “in a stable condition”.

Citi News checks at the Health Ministry has corroborated the story as information there suggests Mr. Agyeman Manu has taken “a few days off from work” and has not reported to work all week.

The UGMC currently has 4 patients on admission at the ICU with several others in the main wards of the hospital’s COVID-19 wing.

The Health Minister who announced Ghana’s first COVID-19 case in a night broadcast in March this year would be the first high profile government official to have confirmed positive for the novel Coronavirus.

He is known for urging the public to be cautious of the virus during his regular appearances at the bi-weekly press briefings on COVID-19 by the Information Ministry which has been conspicuously put on hold for a while.

The information is coming at a time the leader of government business in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah has lamented how MPs, Parliamentary Service staff and journalists who tested positive for the virus have refused to self isolate.

Although no names have been mentioned, Mr. Mensah Bonsu’s lamentations suggest more than one person in the House of Legislature has tested positive and this could include MPs.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly in the Western Region, Anthony K.K. Sam, has passed away due to an illness close associates have disclosed as COVID-19.

A source at the UGMC in Accra where the MCE died told Citi News his Coronavirus case was compounded by a failure of the lung.

ARCHBISHOP NICHOLAS DUNCAN-WILLIAMS’ STATEMENT REGARDING HIS SON, DANIEL’S ACTIONS AND OUTBURST ON SOCIAL MEDIA:

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan Williams and his family thank you for your prayers. Daniel’s outbursts on social media and elsewhere should not be media fodder or click-bait. We acknowledge that the obscenities are abhorrent but understand that he has a serious illness. Daniel has undergone the very best medical interventions, treatments and hospitalizations, yet he still experiences relapses when he does not continue on his prescribed medication.

The Archbishop says “this is a test of his faith. In his own words; “I acknowledge the situation my son is in, and I still love him…please pray for us…. “Love covers a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8

The Archbishop and his family continue to stand firm in their faith believing God for Daniel’s full deliverance, healing and restoration. We ask that you please respect their privacy as they navigate through this trying time.

Psalms 3:3. But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

LECTURERS CAN NOW TEACH TILL 70 YEARS

The government has announced new rules to guide post-retirement contracts for the academic staff of public universities in the country.

Under the rules, even though the mandatory retirement age for academic staff of public universities shall continue to be 60 years, professorial grade staff (Associate Professors and Professors) shall be eligible for post-retirement contracts until the age of 70, in line with constitutional provisions.

Until the current guidelines, that category of staff used to retire at 60, with a few of them being given contracts, which came with challenges of payment in the light of their receiving pensions.

Consequently, the Auditor-General called for the cancellation of such post-retirement contracts.

Post-retirement contract

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, explained that the new rule had become necessary as part of measures to bolster and maintain a critical mass of key academic staff to support the anticipated significant increase in tertiary enrolment as a consequence of the free senior high school (SHS) programme.

He said for the professorial category, “the initial contract shall be for five years up to the age of 65, and then afterward contracts shall be offered on a 2+2+1 basis, subject to need and good health”.

He explained that specific provision must be made for compensation for all staff on post-retirement contracts and that such staff should be clearly designated and accounted for separately as a contract staff in the annual budget of the institutions.

He explained that the post-retirement contract was not automatic, “because if a university does not need your services or a Professor does not want to be engaged, then the contract will not be put in place”.

Rationale

Dr Prempeh said the new rule was important because the universities needed to boost their human resource capacity in research and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) supervision.

He said giving that category of staff the contract was to ensure better student/lecture ratios, especially as the tertiary institutions prepared to receive the large cohort of free SHS products in the next academic year.

To that end, he said, the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) had been tasked to develop and deploy a mechanism for monitoring output in those areas, following the implementation of the new regime for post-retirement contracts.
